SAP lijstwerk in de achtergrond uitvoeren

Ik mag sinds begin dit jaar mijn 1ste stapjes doen in SAP. Dit nadat ik bij woningcorporatie Ymere in en met het conversieteam heb mogen zorgen dat de gegevens vanuit het oude systeem Tobias, goed werden overgezet naar SAP.

Net als elk systeem is het even wennen. En zo liepen we er tegen aan dat sommige rapporten die we probeerden te draaien, te lang nodig hadden om een resultaat op te leveren. Systeembeheer had een bepaalde maximale draaitijd voor interactieve jobs ingesteld, en als je taak niet voor die tijd afgerond was, kreeg je een foutmelding te zien, en je job leverde dan niet je printje op: "Runtime error: TIME_OUT. Time limit exceeded" etc.

Nu kun je jobs / lijstjes die je uit SAP wil halen, ook in de achtergrond laten uitvoeren. Hier lees je hoe je dat doet. Iedereen die langer met SAP werkt, weet dat natuurlijk. En wellicht leer je het ook op veel cursussen. Maar ik wist het nog niet, en kon al Google-end ook geen handleiding vinden. Dus hierbij deel ik die van mezelf maar :-).

Handig kabels oprollen / opbergen

Tsk, deze manier van kabels / touwen oprollen zou iedereen toch aangeleerd moeten worden als basisvaardigheid :-). Handig opbergen, handig hergebruiken...

Voorbeeld Service Level Agreement / SLA

(Dutch) Het is handig om afspraken rond automatisering / ICT / IT vast te leggen. Als je dat niet doet, ontstaat er al snel een situatie waarin de afnemer / klant iets anders verwacht dan de leverancier die de ICT beheert.

Die afspraken vastleggen kan in een SLA, een Service Level Agreement, in Nederlands: een Dienst Niveau Overeenkomst (DNO). Je legt vast wat er wordt beheerd, wanneer je de helpdesk kunt bellen, hoe snel men moet reageren, welke diensten worden geleverd, wat de plichten van de gebruikers zijn etc.

Leidt dat tot dikke documenten? Dat kan, maar hoeft niet. Het hangt af van hoe pragmatisch je er mee om gaat. Belangrijk is o.a. om alleen dingen af te spreken die je goed kunt meten.

In opdracht van (stichting Ict op School/) stichting Kennisnet is door adviseurs van adviesbureau Verdonck Klooster & Associates (VKA) een voorbeeld SLA opgesteld (de SLA toolkit). Dat is gebeurd in 2002. Is het materiaal daarmee verouderd? Misschien deels, maar voor veel organisaties kan het nog een prima basis zijn, denk ik. En het is gratis ;-). Daarom vroeg ik, toen ik er achter kwam dat het materiaal niet meer bij Kennisnet op de website stond, of ik het mocht publiceren, en dat mocht.

In de ZIP-file vind je niet alleen de SLA-documenten, maar ook voorbeeld geheimhoudingsverklaring, tips over het aansturen van ICT-ers, voorbeelden van hoe je je afspraken naar gebruikers kunt communiceren en de publicatie 'Beheerst Beheren'.

Kopieer het materiaal aub. En plaats het evt ook online, zodat, mocht mijn kopie plots verdwijnen, het materiaal toch te vinden is. Een link naar deze pagina/bronvermelding wordt gewaardeerd.

Mooie voorbeelden die ik vond (ten tijde dat ik dit noteerde, werkte de onderstaande links: meld me aub als een link op enig moment niet meer werkt):

• Floris Spronk stuurde me dit voorbeeld SLA / DNO. Dit document is geanonimiseerd; het origineel is gebruikt tussen 2 gemeentes, waarbij de ene gemeente een deel van de ict-diensten ging leveren aan de ander.

Vouwfiets: welke?

Ik reis al een tijd met de trein, en tot nu toe woon/werk ik vlakbij het station. Maar af en toe zit je daar wat verder vanaf en kost lopen gewoon te veel tijd. Dus overweeg ik een vouwfiets. Iemand goede tips? Waar ik mi op moet letten is: moet makkelijk & snel in- & uitvouwbaar zijn, niet te zwaar, beetje stabiel/veilig & lekker fietsen. En natuurlijk moet hij een beetje stevig zijn. En liefst goed mee te nemen in de trein (weleens gezien hoe mensen soms staan te wurmen of die fietsen aan een ketting bij de treindeuren/op het balkon zetten enzo: wat een getob). 

Wat heb ik al gezien: 

• een recente (2009) test van vouwfietsen; 
• eind 2007 deed Tros Radar een test; 
• uit eerdere tests komen de Brompton en Dahon er vaak goed uit, maar ja, 600 a 1000+ euro... Ook de fietsersbond heeft testinfo; 
• een kennis wees me op deze 'Hollandia Alurex de Luxe' bij Office Center. Een aktie voor 155 euro (ex BTW). Leuk, maar via Google geen test van te vinden. Vage Chinese import met een vertrouwenswekkende naam er op? Misschien een goed ding, maar ik zou dat wel getest willen zien; 
• ik heb op Marktplaats gekeken, maar vermoedelijk is er meer vraag dan aanbod? Weinig te vinden... 
• iemand waarmee ik soms werk heeft een step gekocht... Goedkoop, goed opvouwbaar en voor kleine afstanden sneller dan lopen 
• de Hema heeft (oeps, nu ik dit bericht tik, is hij al niet meer leverbaar/vindbaar op de site) een vouwfiets in de aanbieding; 
•  Een kennis is fietsenmaker: ze verkopen vooral normale fietsen, hebben ooit Bromptons gehad, maar die verkochten te weinig ivm de prijs. Nu had ze een Dahon D7 staan: die verkopen ze als enige omdat ze vinden dat die goede kwaliteit voor een goede prijs biedt (dit is een ondernemer die gaat voor kwaliteit en geen goedkope 'zooi' gaat verkopen omdat dat zo lekker loopt ivm lage prijs). 
•  Iemand nog tips :-)? 

Update 18 januari 2010: Kassa deed weer een test van vouwfietsen. De Brompton komt er weer als duurste, maar overall het best uit, met Dahon op de 2de plaats. 

Free software!!!

What about a free zip/unzip-tool? A media center. A photo-editor. A p2p download-tool. An instant messenger. A CD-ripper. An ERP-suite.

Literally thousands of programs can be downloaded for free, thanks to developers (don't ask why these people let you benefit from their hard labour!)

After checking the tools out, why not cast a vote and reward some developers?

Most important video you will ever see? Growth = Bad!

A friend brought this video to my attention. It's a professor explaining why a very modest growth has huge consequences. And why understanding this, might help us save the world! Really. Don't believe me? Please watch this video! (even if it is only one of the 8 parts per day)

Examples from the video: a growth of the population of only 1% per year means you have twice as many people in only one lifetime. And an inflation of 7% per year means you pay 960 euro in 70 years for what now costs 15 euro. Understanding this, also helps understanding stories in newspapers saying crime has doubled in 10 years (which means 7% growth a year).

This friend also pointed me to this Crash Course ('everything you need to know about the economy in the shortest amount of time'): it shows how our current monetary systems works, and what might happen in the next couple of years as a result. This really is another video you want to check out! This is material you normally pay lots of money for in a seminar, or need to read books for taking hours of your time.

How to buy stuff in the US (for Dutch people)

Straat bbq start-pakket

(Dutch) Samen met wat buurtgenoten hebben we afgelopen jaren enkele keren een straat-barbeque georganiseerd. Dit jaar weer. Wil je dat ook doen en ben je benieuwd hoe wij dat doen? In dit bestand vind je de teksten die we gebruiken om te kijken hoeveel animo er is, de begroting, de brief naar de gemeente om een vergunning te krijgen, en informatie over wat we allemaal geregeld hebben.

Synching Blackberry, Mac iCal and Google Calendar

Synching devices still is a hassle for a lot of people. Sure, lots of solutions, but most of them don't work with most devices and if they do, have quirky behaviour, loose data etc.

My wife just bought a magazine that had a CD with it containing PocketMac for Blackberry. This enables her to sync her Macbook with her BlackBerry. Her mag copy is free, and on the Pocketmac-site it also seems a free download. And i just found Spanning Sync which can sync iCal with Google Calendar... This costs some money (yearly or lifetime), but depending on your needs might be well worth the money... So we're now trying this for our situation. If it doesn't work out, we'll give The Missing Sync a try.

For Windows without using Outlook (Outlook users can (also) sync with Google Calendar or use Astrasync) i have a hard time finding a comparable solution. Maybe CompanionLink would do the trick. I still need to try (open sourced) GCalSync, but the fact it seems there have not been updates since 2007 makes me wonder whether it's wise to bet on that app. And this post describes synching Mozilla Thunderbird with a bb and ScheduleWorld (the latter one you might want to look in to on its own, as it might do what you need). Others use Funambol or Toffa's Goosync.

If you live in the US, you can sync directly with Google Calendar. For some (also, US-only), Google Sync works. Others are syncing Outlook to Plaxo to Google and to Mac...

If you have a Windows device, you might want to look at FinchSync. Or the newly announced Oxycube.

Linux users can give OpenSync and Barry a try, but at the moment of writing, this is not for the faint hearted.

Update april 2nd: just read about another (paid?) solution: SugarSync.

Boek: "Vijf krachten om ze mee te krijgen"

(Dutch) Op Managementsite staat een leuk artikel over het boek Hoe krijg je ze mee? Vijf krachten om een verandering te laten slagen (Mars, 2006), waarin 5 manieren worden beschreven om een verandertraject uit te voeren. Enkele quotes:

What is eating up your hard drive?

Lots of people have a growing amount of digital data. Besided needing a good backup (you DO have one, right? And you DO know you should keep really important data on a seperate location, so it's safe in case of like a fire? You mnight want to consider one of those online backup solutions popping up).

Anyway: besides backing up, you also might want to do some cleaning up once and a while. You don't have to if you have enough money (to pay for the increasing cost of backups) and don't care about the environment (as more data eventually means more storage space, often meaning more power).

If you do want to do some cleaning, it might help if you know what is taking up the most space and weed through that first (although many small files might add up to a lot of space and you might want to give that some attention to). Some help:

• HDGraph is a great way of visualizing what is taking up space (it needs .Net 2.0 to work). JDisk and Treesize are alternatives;
  
• you might want to check for duplicate files (Duplicate File Finder is a nice one)
  
• don't forget to clean up temporary files, check for software you don't use anymore and uninstall it and check your email (remove big attachments, throw away old mail etc).
  

Life after oil

What's with the image? It is the oil-peak in human history. The time we are, and will be, using oil, is just a thin line in our history. Sure, gas prizes have been rising, but they'll come down, right? Maybe not. Just found lifeaftertheoilcrash.net . "Sure", some will say, "another one of those doomsday websites". And as soon as the gas prizes lower a couple of cents, for whatever reason, those people will use it as proof; "we will be using oil for a long time". Apart from staggering evidence, the site also includes a section "How do I know this isn't just fear mongering by loony-environmentalists and 'the end is nigh' types?" :-). The site comes with loads of proof; just one snippet that i think says enough: "Crude oil prices have doubled since 2001, but oil companies have increased their budgets for exploring new oil fields by only a small fraction. Likewise, U.S. refineries are working close to capacity, yet no new refinery has been constructed since 1976. And oil tankers are fully booked, but outdated ships are being decommissioned faster than new ones are being built".

I'm afraid the author of the site is right. The western economies have been using the better part of the oil reserve. Upcoming economies have all the right to take that last piece of the cake! And it will be gone in no time. The website claims "that the aftermath of Peak Oil will extend far beyond how much you will pay for gas". If you take the time to scan the proof the site supplies, it is hard to disbelieve. We don't want to believe. We are hoping for this miracle technology. Or assume it won't be that bad. Sure, we will not be able to stop it from happening, but knowing what might be coming, enables you to prepare.

The site not only deals with stuff like alternatives to oil, but also hints on what you could do to prepare. No positive news here, not something you want to hear. Is not believing this, being the ostrich?

The site states stocks will become worthless. What happens if stocks are part of your mortgage? What will be valuable in the long run? Will it be like in the middle ages, will gold be the most valuable and easiest to take with you & trade with? Lots of questions... And that all besides worries about global warming.

Having trouble keeping the time in Windows right? The long-time-default time sync machines time.windows.com and the one at nist ( time.nist.gov ) no longer work. Somebody tipped me of tick.usno.navy.mil (192.5.41.40) and US DC tock.usno.navy.mil (192.5.41.41) . You should check whether your Internet Service Provider offers a timeserver (mostly named ntp.ispname.countrycode-or-com). Another solution is the NTP-pool.

You want to try out some software, but you're not entirely sure whether you can trust it, whether is contains stuff like spyware etc? Sandboxing is a technique that traps the new software in a closed environment, so it can't do any harm to your PC, to data and programs on your hard drive. Sandboxie is free software that gives you just that, an environment in which you can safely test software.

Trying to (re)find a video on the internet? This WallStreetJournal-article states Truveo is the best starting place...

One of these days i want to practice folding shirts like this ... much more efficient :-). Think of all the time you'll save in your life...

Capture streaming video

I once figured out how to capture streaming video, but i forgot. Had to do it again, the figuring out. So this time i blog it :-). I use an app called URL Helper to obtain the url of the actual video file: often this real file name is obscured, so it is harder to capture the videostream. Once i find the URL with URLhelper, i download the stream: i use Net Transport, but i think more apps will do that trick, like HiDownload and maybe even asfrecorder.

And these online streaming video capturing services might help as well.

Online Office alternatives

Online Office ... i guess if we look for components, we can already put together an online web based Office-suite. Like JotSpot Tracker or Google spreadsheet for spreadsheets, Writely for word processing etc. Thumbstacks or S5 to create presentations and slides (web based alternatives for Powerpoint).

Update april 26th 2006: what about this ThinkFree/Freethink online office with storage? Or the Ajax-suite of online applications.
