Kraaien ruimen onze rommel op?

(Dutch) Weer een leuke TED-video; dit keer over hoe slim kraaien zijn. Dat je ze prima kunt leren om dingen in te leveren voor wat voer (bv een pinda). En dat je die vogels, die zich prima aanpassen aan mensen, en dus bijna overal te vinden zijn waar mensen zijn, misschien kunt slim kunt inzetten, in plaats van ze als plaag te zien. Misschien leuk om daar een wedstrijd van te maken, bv voor op scholen: wie bedenkt de slimste toepassing voor kraaien.

Op ca 3:00 en 5:20 van het filmpje kun je 2 voorbeelden zien van hoe slim kraaien zijn. En vanaf ca 07:20 legt de spreker uit hoe je kraaien kunt trainen.

(English below)Het filmpje 'de macht van 10' is leuk om af en toe te kijken. In het filmpje zoomen we 1st uit: we zien een stel liggen in het park, en zoomen uit tot in het universum. En daarna zoomen we rap weer in, tot op cel-niveau. En nu is er ook een versie, waarbij je met een schuifje zelf kunt zoomen, van koffieboon tot koolstof-atoom. En later vond ik ook nog deze 'Schaal van het universum'-animatie-schuif.

In it, while looking at a couple leasuring in a park, we zoom out until we are somewhere in the universe, and then back again, all the way down to cell level. And now there is also a website where, using a slider, you can zoom between coffee bean level and carbon atom.

De 3de wereld verdwijnt

De meeste mensen zijn opgegroeid met het beeld dat er een derde wereld is, die zeer arm is, waar mensen kort leven en veel kinderen hebben. Maar onderstaande video toont aan dat dat beeld onjuist is. De derde wereld is aan het verdwijnen.

Op www.gapminder.org is zelf met de data te 'spelen'. Op dit site staan nog meer filmpjes rond deze informatie, bv deze.

De presentator, Hans Rosling, vertelde zijn verhaal eerder op TED waar ik eerder over blogde. Ik werd er weer op gewezen door tweets van Eelco @kraefft.

Eerder werden er ook al versies van 'Did you know' gemaakt: ik had enkele 'nieuwe' versies gezien, maar dat was meestal slechts een klein verschil met het origineel. Bovenstaande versie is echt een actuele versie.

Onderzoek: vogels slimmer dan je denkt

(Dutch) Hoe slim zijn vogels? Onderzoek van Irene Pepperberg toont aan dat ze slimmer zijn dan je denkt. Zoals ze in de video ook zegt: ze zijn tenslotte in de natuur bv ook in staat te zien of een bes wel of niet rijp is. De video wordt interessant vanaf ongeveer 1 minuut 30.

Extreme optical illusion

It's a coincidence i blog about reliability of our observation skills twice in a row. Via Twitter i just read about this unbelievable optical illusion.

It really looks there is both green and blue in this picture. It is said both what most people see as blue and green in the picture, is actual the same color! I could not believe this. I went to an online picture edit tool, Splashup. You can load the picture in there by url, and use the Eyedropper tool in the right lower corner of the toolbar (the vertical bar on the left of the screen) to point to any pixel in the picture. On the right, you will be shown the color value. And it is true: even while your brain says you're seeing 2 different colors, the tool shows you it really is one! Unbelievable!

A friend reminded me of another good one with 2 images in 1, where depending on the distance you look at it, you see either the first or second image. Or this one, where a girl is revolving (Dutch, over hersens), and you can either see her turn left, right or (some people) both ways (which is supposed to say something about your brain).

See the comments for at least one (maybe over time more will follow, but i won't update this post, and you can google/search for more ;-)) other website with a collection of optical illusions.

How reliable are human observations: test yours!

This is a neat mind trick. There is this clip where you see a couple of people throwing 2 balls. There is a group with black shirts, and a group with white shirts. Your goal: count how many times the balls are thrown by the people with white shirts. You can find the video at Viscog.

Don't read this message any further before having watched the video. No, really, stop reading, you'll spoil the trick!

Now: watch the same movie again, but DON'T watch the ball. Watch the monkey / gorilla that walks into the video from the right a few seconds after the video starts. Can you believe you actually missed this the first time? Amazing how your mind can filter information! Now, what could you be missing on other moments in your live? How trustworthy are your, or anybody's, observations?

You DID see the monkey the first time? Good for you! Most people don't see it!

(Dutch): bekijk deze video waarin 2 teams een bal over gooien. Je doel: tel het aantal keren dat de bal van het witte team van handen wisselt. Stop nu direct met lezen. Bekijk 1st de video en tel. Ik ga nu vertellen wat de clou is, en als je dat leest voordat je de video bekijkt, werkt het natuurlijk niet. Goed. Bekijk dan de video voor de 2de keer. Zie je de aap/gorilla in beeld? Had je die de 1ste keer ook gezien, zonder dat je wist dat hij in beeld zou komen? De meeste mensen zien hem niet. Je bent zo gefocused op de bal, dat je hem niet bewust ziet. Dus wat zegt dat over het waarnemingsvermogen van mensen? Hoe betrouwbaar zijn getuigenverklaringen etc? En zie je dus ook in het dagelijks leven veel dingen niet?

Most important video you will ever see? Growth = Bad!

A friend brought this video to my attention. It's a professor explaining why a very modest growth has huge consequences. And why understanding this, might help us save the world! Really. Don't believe me? Please watch this video! (even if it is only one of the 8 parts per day)

Examples from the video: a growth of the population of only 1% per year means you have twice as many people in only one lifetime. And an inflation of 7% per year means you pay 960 euro in 70 years for what now costs 15 euro. Understanding this, also helps understanding stories in newspapers saying crime has doubled in 10 years (which means 7% growth a year).

This friend also pointed me to this Crash Course ('everything you need to know about the economy in the shortest amount of time'): it shows how our current monetary systems works, and what might happen in the next couple of years as a result. This really is another video you want to check out! This is material you normally pay lots of money for in a seminar, or need to read books for taking hours of your time.

The story of stuff ... over onze gadgets, spullen.

(Dutch) We staan er niet vaak bij stil, maar wat gebeurt er voordat we spullen kunnen kopen? Hoe ontstaan ze? Waar komt al dat spul vandaan? Wat gebeurt er als we het weg gooien? En waar komen de grondstoffen vandaan? Raken die nooit op?

Daarover was een korte video 'The Story of Stuff' gemaakt, en die is nu vertaald, ondermeer in het Engels. Helaas kan ik hem niet embedden op de site, maar klik hier. En kies dan je taal (ondertitels).

Huisdieren bijsluiters

(Dutch) Ik hoorde van de week over een (leek mij uitstekend) initiatief voor bijsluiters voor (huis)dieren: informatie die mensen zouden moeten lezen liefst voordat ze huisdieren aanschaffen. Omdat wij de aanschaf van wat kippen overwegen en mijn dochter denkt dat een leguaan wel leuk is, dacht ik: de site eens bezoeken. Ik klik naar bijsluiters, naar Vogels en wat tref ik daar: de vast veel voorkomende Vink en Kanarie, maar verder alleen de Kalkoen, de Kerkuil en de Struisvogel. Laat ik het zo zeggen: het verbaasde me. Ik had op grond van het radiobericht verwacht dat ik vooral bijsluiters van veel gehouden huisdieren zou vinden, maar ik verwacht dat er maar heel weinig Nederlanders de aanschaf van een Kerkuil of Struisvogel als huisdier overwegen ... Is mijn verwachting fout? Waarom wel die vogels en niet meer populaire vogels? Ik heb de organisatie gemaild en ben benieuwd naar het antwoord.

We can create new life!

How far have scientists come with building life from scratch? No, not just changing existing life like the mouse with that ear on it's back, or cows with enzyms in their milk to produce hard to make medicine. No, new life, things that never existed on earth. Well, have a look at this short TED (i love TED) video where Craig Venter explains what his team is doing.

I didn't know life can change pretty drastically (but then again i didn't study biology for long ;-)), nor that you can radiate life to death and blow it to smithereens and stitch it back together and boot it up again. Hell, i didn't realize you can put together some chemical structures and jumpstart (i love mr Venter calling it "booting up") it so it starts to actually life... Amazing video. Scarry as well? Wonder what could go wrong ;-)... If our robot-overlords-gone-sour wont't kill us, will new life we created do that :-)? Makes me wonder again whether we are all more than a pile of chemical structures...

A computer driven car: reality?

It's such a smart idea: start a competition, award a price, and have universities, investors and other cooperate to do amazing stuff. In 2006 Darpa did the desert challenge, where cars had to finish a course without human intervention. In 2007 they upped the ante: the cars had to finish an urban course, avoiding other vehicles on the track, abide the traffic rules (stop at lines, let other vehicles go first). Would you enter a care without a human, and have it drive you to your destination in a crowded city? Well, look like what the teams already accomplished!

The same way of working by the X-Prize-foundation led to the development of a vehicle for commercial human space-flight.
