Raoul Teeuwenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08147564137868005615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6278802.post-86016850561961403052023-01-07T22:21:00.005+01:002023-01-07T22:21:35.107+01:00What to do when your password vault gets stolen?

Whether you store your passwords on a paper in your drawer, some self hosted service, or an online service: your password 'vault' can be stolen.

As long as it isn't, activate 2nd factor security to all (especially high value) accounts you have! Especially your password vault, your email-accounts (password-resets will go there ;-)) and your bank accounts. 2FA will make it hard for hackers, even if they get hold of your password.

What to do if your vault is somehow compromised and all your passwords are at risk and you need to change all your passwords? Since that could be a lot of work, you might want to prioritize and:

Change your master/vault password (just so in case they decrypt your old one, they can't access new information)

Change your most valued services first: email, bank etc

Think about what services you use to log in to other services, like signing in to a website using your Google/Facebook/Microsoft/Twitter/Apple...-account > change the password of those 'super services'

Check if your service offers the option to help with changing passwords: more and more services are starting to provide a service like that, like Google, LastPass etc (btw: see how usefull those services are? What if we would be signing in to all of our sites with just those services: on a breach, we would only need to change those passwords :-))

Go through the list of accounts in your vault and check whether you maybe forgot some high value account ... While going through that list, maybe delete the accounts you know are really old (if you want, check if the account still works and delete it in the service)

Change your most used services: many password managers show you when you last logged in to an account and you can sort your list on last used

Review all your 'notes' and see if anything in there is also sensitive (challenge questions, backup codes etc)

Change the rest

Imagesource: https://www.uregina.ca/is/security/resources/resource-password-manager.html .

Raoul Teeuwenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08147564137868005615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6278802.post-56303036317456901612022-08-17T15:07:00.000+02:002023-08-17T15:14:58.810+02:00Dynamics CRM error: invalid recipient type

While working with Dynamics CRM, a workflow threw me this error: "invalid recipient type" (Dutch: "Ongeldig type geadresseerde"). Mijn eerste keer :-). En mogen me altijd aanspreken, vragen stellen, suggesties doen etc!

I Google-d, maar most pages mention the usual fixes that did not work for me. So on this page i plan to archive what works for me; so that i don't have to Google through all the pages that don't work for me, and maybe it will help others ;-).

I found i often could edit the SD (add a file, change a file name) fine on a Macbook. So if you have a (friend with a) Macbook, try that as well! Probably also works with machines running Linux ;-).

Raoul Teeuwenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08147564137868005615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6278802.post-70200568253107064552020-06-07T13:21:00.070+02:002023-11-17T16:52:43.319+01:00EV - and Tesla model 3 - tips & tricks

I've created a playlist with video's that contain info to get you started, video's with tips etc. You can skip to the next video in the list when a video is not to your liking:

Apart from those, i also like the following features and have the following tips (all based on a Tesla 3 build around aug 2019 with firmware 2020.20.12):

Model 3 can automatically fold and unfold the side mirrors based on location, which saves you from having to manually position them each time you need to fold or unfold the mirrors when at a frequented place (such as narrow garages, tight parking spaces, etc.). To set up, Model 3 must be driving at a low speed (less than 3 mph (5 km/h)) or stopped at the location you want your vehicle to remember. Go to Controls > Quick Controls > Mirrors > Always Fold Mirrors at this Location. Next time you approach the saved location, your mirrors fold and unfold within 25 feet (7.5meters) of the specified location.

Seat adjust-ability: don't forget your front seats are 3-way adjustable, including lumbar. Check all the knobs at the side of your chair ;-).

Phone charging done right: if your version didn't came with one: get a wireless charging pad or one or two 'right angle usb lightning cables' to make it easy to slot your phone into a charge plug (instead of using non-right-angle cables that tend to move around)

TESLA M3 BASICS

Unlock & drive: enter your car using a paired phone or key fob (or use a key card), press the brake and shift gear. Wait to long, and you might need to re-authenticate (with the key card or phone).

Exit & lock: put car in Park (or open the door which normally will put it into P as well), open the door, exit and walk away with a paired phone or -fob (or lock with your key card). When the doors lock, the exterior lights flash once. To also hear a confirmation sound, touch Controls > Locks > Lock Confirmation Sound > ON.

Free miles: when you buy a Tesla and do so using someones 'referral code/link', you don't pay anything extra BUT you (and the other person) get 1.000 free super charger miles. You can use our link: https://ts.la/corine26070 .

TESLA M3 GOOD TO KNOWS

Open all doors: to make it convenient to pick up passengers, you can also unlock all doors at any time by shifting into Park then pressing the Park button (at the end of the right stick) a second time. (you can also click the padlock on the console)

Dash cam - save on honk: when you've installed a USB drive, you can use dash cam. To save the last 10 minutes, you can click the dash cam icon on the console, but you can also use 'Controls > Safety and Security > Save Clips on Honk > ON' so the last 10 minutes is saved when you honk.

Brakes auto on on regenerative braking: If regenerative braking is aggressively slowing Model 3 (such as when your foot is completely off the accelerator pedal at highway speeds), the brake lights turn on to alert others that you are slowing down.

Navigation

Drop pin to navigate. Drop a pin by pressing and holding your finger anywhere on the map. When you drop a pin, or touch an existing pin, the chosen location is centered on the map, and a popup window provides information about the location. From this popup, you can navigate to the location.

Navigate to 'Hungry'/'Lucky'. Model 3 can suggest nearby locations based on whether you are feeling Hungry or Lucky. In the navigation search bar, touch Hungry or Lucky. Hungry suggests popular restaurants, whereas Lucky suggests popular destinations (such as museums and amusement parks). For a new suggestion, go back and touch Hungry or Lucky again for different results.

Round trip energy estimation. When navigating to a destination, Model 3 helps you anticipate your charging needs by calculating the amount of energy that remains when you reach your destination. When navigating, the map displays this calculation at the bottom of the expanded turn-by-turn direction list (see Navigating on page 150). If you also want to know if you have enough energy for a round trip, touch the energy calculation to display an estimate of your round trip energy usage.

Minimize charging times during trips. Trip Planner helps you take longer road trips. If reaching your destination requires charging, Trip Planner routes you through the appropriate Supercharger locations. Trip Planner selects a route and provides charging times to minimize the amount of time you spend driving and charging. To enable Trip Planner, touch the map's settings icon, then touch Trip Planner. Bonus for using this option over just stopping at a Supercharger yourself: the car will pre-heat the Battery to maximize conditions for fast charging.

Visualize (projected) energy consumption. The Energy app provides a visual representation of your vehicle's real-time and projected energy usage. To use the Energy app, navigate to Application Launcher > Energy on the touchscreen

Expand/Collapse route. When you've entered a destination, you can easily change between the expanded route or condensed view by tapping the destination title.

Waze on Tesla. Visit https://teslawaze.azurewebsites.net/ on your Tesla browser to get Waze on your Tesla.

Autopilot/FSD

Overtake Acceleration: When following a vehicle with
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control active, briefly engaging the turn signal
(to indicate a move into the passing lane) accelerates Model 3 towards
the vehicle ahead. By momentarily holding the turn signal lever up or
down, you can quickly accelerate up to your set speed without having to
press the accelerator pedal. Overtake Acceleration is intended as an aid
when passing a vehicle ahead of you. When the turn signal is engaged,
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control continues to maintain distance from the
vehicle ahead, but allows you to drive slightly closer than your
selected distance. Read more about it in the manual.

Autosteer & objects partially in driving lane : Maybe
you've seen video's of people where their Tesla (almost) hits something
partially in the driving lane. The manual states: "Autosteer is not
designed to, and will not, steer Model 3 around objects partially or
completely in the driving lane". Good to know ;-). Might improve with
updates.

Touch to set speed limit.
Model 3 will show the speed limit it detected or derived on the touch
screen. When you click that icon, Model 3 will set that speed as cruise
speed.

Unattended autopark. When in front of a tight parking space, double tap the P button on the right stalk twice to pop up a menu. Select whether the parking spot is to the front or back of your Tesla, get out of the car, and the car will park itself.

EU limiting FSD: an excellent article on why FSD is limited within the EU.

Mute audio: press the left scroll button. Press again to un-mute.

Sentry

Backup at Tesla: The Model 3 has a Sentry mode. It records video. But i wondered: what about 'off site storage' of the recorded video? But what do you know: when the Alarm state is triggered, the most recent six seconds prior to the security event may be sent to Tesla for temporary backup for approximately 72 hours. You can enable or disable the collection of this video at any time by touching Controls > Safety & Security > Data Sharing.

Auto on, but not at... You can customize Sentry Mode to automatically activate, but exclude specific locations like home, work and favorites

What drive? For local storage you need for instance a USB thumb drive or SSD. The Samsung T5 500GB is often quoted as being a good option that works with the Model 3.

Battery

Lifetime: The most important way to preserve the Battery is to LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE PLUGGED IN when you are not using it. This is particularly important if you are not planning to drive Model 3 for several weeks. When plugged in, Model 3 wakes up when needed to automatically maintain a charge level that maximizes the lifetime of the Battery. Here some data about Tesla 3 battery degradation.

Self discharging: The Battery can discharge at a rate of approximately 1% per day, though the discharge rate may vary depending on environmental factors (such as cold weather), vehicle configuration, and your selected settings (like whether Sentry is on, whether apps are preventing the model 3 to enter sleep mode etc).

Open charge port: many options for this, but maybe easiest: Press the bottom of the charge port door when Model 3 is unlocked or an authenticated phone is nearby.

Slow pulse, almost full: The frequency at which the charge port light pulses slows down as the charge level approaches full. When charging is complete, the light stops pulsing and is solid green.

Dutch readers definitely check out this page with lots of info on charging, battery chemistry, calibrating the battery, what parts of your car uses the most energy, charing at home and on the road, degredation etc

Hazard lights button. In case you want to alert people driving behind you about a hazard: the button is located in the ceiling, above the rear view mirror.

Escape in case of an emergency: an illuminated mechanical
release located inside the rear trunk allows you to open the rear trunk
from the inside if Model 3 has no electrical power. This mechanical
release also allows a person locked inside to get out. Make sure you
know to find it (check this video and/or look it up in the manual ;-)).

Voice control.
Control various aspects of Model 3 by speaking statements or commands.
For example, "Speed up the wipers", "The screen is too bright", "Turn on
the driver's seat heater", "I'm cold", activate Sentry Mode ("Keep
Tesla safe"/"Keep my car safe"/"Sentry on") ... A complete list (EN/NL)

Voice controlled bug reporting:
You can use voice commands to provide feedback to Tesla. Say "Note",
"Report", "Bug note", or "Bug report" (in the English language) followed
by brief comments in your language of choice. Model 3 takes a snapshot
of its systems, including your current location, vehicle diagnostic
data, and screen captures of the touchscreen.

A list with voice commands.

Entertainment

Don't forget to try out Mario Kart (using your actual steering wheel :-))

And check out Caraoke/Karaoke (available in the music menu)

Visit https://abettertheater.com/ to get more streaming options using the Tesla browser

Towing hook: In case you need to tow, consult the manual! The
tow eye is located under the carpet in the front trunk. Locate the tow
eye cover, a cover in the lower left of the front bumper; release the
tow eye cover by pressing firmly on its top right perimeter until it
pivots inward, then gently pulling the raised section toward you. Fully
insert the tow eye into the opening, then turn it counter-clockwise
until securely fastened.

Icy conditions?

Use low regen on snow/ice: Tesla recommends using the Low setting in snowy or icy conditions to help maintain vehicle stability.

Disable auto mirror folding: If ice buildup is expected when
parking, turn off Auto-Fold Mirrors by navigating to 'Controls >
Mirrors > Auto-Fold > ON'

Raise wipers: Controls > Service >Wiper Service Mode
> ON. This raises your wipers so they are against the windshield and
they can defrost while the windshield defrosts

Use seat heating: Using the seat heaters to keep warm is more efficient than using climate controls.

Stay clean: keep the sensors and radar free of snow, ice, mud,
and dirt to allow best Autopilot performance. Occasionally remove any
buildup of dirt by wiping the components with a soft cloth dampened with
warm water.

Turbo defogging: press the defog front window icon in the lower bar of the touch screen twice to turbo defog.

WD40 for door handles: Preemptively applying WD-40 to the
door handle pivot pins can help prevent ice buildup inside your door
handle. Read the manual on how to apply.

Parking on a slope. While parked, press the P button on the right stalk for 2 seconds to engage the emergency park (a red P indicator will appear).

Cleaning the car. From the manual: "If washing in an automatic car wash, use touch-less car washes only. These car washes have no parts (brushes, etc.) that touch the surfaces of Model 3. Using any other type of car wash could cause damage that is not covered by the warranty"

Talking about (paint) damage: in case you want to repair damaged paint: you can find your color codes for instance here, and for instance in the Netherlands order cans of paint here.

Long parking at an airport: Dutch article here.

Whining noise

Even when not in use, you may hear Model 3 emit a whining noise or the sound of water circulating. These sounds are normal and occur when the internal cooling systems turn on to support various vehicle functions, such as maintaining the 12V battery and balancing the temperature of the high voltage Battery.

When charging, particularly at high currents, the refrigerant compressor and fan operate as needed to keep the Battery cool. Therefore, it is normal to hear sounds during charging

Closing the front trunk: press with both hands just next to the center. So not with 1 or 2 hands at the center ;-)

Pedestrian warning system: causes Model3 to emit sound when
driving below 20 mph(32 km/h). Not available on vehicles manufactured
prior to sept 2019. And only the US manual notes it, so not available
(yet?) in non-US cars.

Cleaning your Tesla: for the plastic parts i read this tip: "First used water with a little APC, All Purpose Cleaner (don't use too much) to clean. Follow up with stuff to treat plastic-with-matte-finish (like from Megiuars). Rub in with a clean dry cloth. Treat all plastic parts."

Btw: it's a very safe vehicle to be in as well.

RESET MODES

Since so much is 'computerized', these cars sometimes can at times show typical computer kind of problems. For situations like that, the Tesla offers 2 kinds of resets:

Soft reset: press and hold down the 2 scroll balls on the steering wheel simultaneously for a couple of seconds until the center screen reboots

Power Cycling the vehicle: 1.Shift into Park. 2. On the touchscreen, touch Controls >Safety & Security > Power Off. 3. Wait for at least two minutes without interacting with the vehicle (do not open the doors, touch the brake pedal, touch the touchscreen, etc.) 4. After two minutes have passed, press the brake pedal or open the door to wake the vehicle

Holding the brake while pressing down the scroll wheels is the same as without pressing the break. Also, there is an even more hard reset involving unhooking the battery, but we'll leave that to a Tesla service center/specialist ;-).

BUYING A TESLA WITH A BONUS

You can simply buy a Tesla. Or do it using a link from a current Tesla-owner, which will give you 1.500 free (!) supercharger km's (and also give me 1.500 free supercharger km's). There is NO catch! Ready to order a Tesla: do it through https://ts.la/raoul28447 .

ACCESSOIRES

Accessories we have or i read are good:

we bought

trunk mat from 'Good Road Store' (you wonder how some people come up with store names and who is behind a name/store )

So i had had it with MacOS (keyboard butterfly problems, Catalina hanging...). Time to try something different. And since most of my colleagues use some Linux flavor, i opted for Kubuntu (at moment of writing v19.10, not on my Mac, on a Dell Latitude 7400).

This blog post contains some of the things i ran into, options i choose etc. For myself, but maybe for others as well.

am using an OwnCloud implementation (SURFdrive), so installed that

for Dropbox, i'm using the official Dropbox Linux client (nice: a Dropbox-icon shows whether your files are in sync. Too bad: this client only support Ext4 as file system)

for Google Drive and OneDrive, after trying other solutions first and spending far too much time trying to find a sufficient working config, i eventually caved and decided to spend some money on InSync, which works great. The other clients for instance lacked clear status notifications about sync problems

for Google Drive i tried OverGrive (also shows a sync icnon in your tray)

i was using OneDrive. Microsoft doesn't supply a Linux client (why not?), so found a couple, paid and free, and decided to go with a command line version

this Onedrive client doesn't give you an icon showing whether files are in sync, so you have to check periodically whether it's synching

(i also tried RClone, but found out it didn't do two way sync, which is a must for me, so gave up on RClone)

for media streaming ended up with Kodi, after trying Plex (which i could not get working with my Samsung TV)

i installed VirtualBox for when i need to keep file 100% compatibility with typical Microsoft files: installed Windows10 and Office2019. VirtualBox Guest Additions enable sharing folders and clipboard between host and guest OS

i wanted to be able to access my data from both my Linux boot as
well as when booting from Windows, so opted to put my data on a separate
partition which i formatted using NTFS . So had to direct above cloud
storage sync clients to store the data on that Data partition. With the official Dropbox client, this doesn't work, since it only supports EXT4.

i had problems where my Wifi would drop / disconnect / not connect. Eventually i found this where i read by default Kubuntu changes the Mac address for privacy reasons, which might have caused the problem

i really often missed an annotation tool, to add a box, oval, arrow, text etc to a screen shot or something. This thread lists some possibilities.

My company provided me with Adobe Premiere Pro installation files. I tried to install it on Windows 10 64 bits. When i clicked the installer MSI file, it would pop up a dialog "Gathering required information", the progress bar would fill till about 80%, stall, suddenly a new bar would pop up with a progression bar running backwards, all windows would close,no error, thanks.

After searching for the solution, the following worked for me:

"open elevated Command Prompt. To do so, type CMD in Start menu or Start screen search box, and then simultaneously press Ctrl+Shift+Enter keys." (as described here)

i browsed to the installer file (using CD commands and DIR to check the contents of the folder you're in)

i used "msiexec /i Adobe_Premiere_Pro_12.1.1.msi" to install Adobe

Stuff i found handy in regard to time lapses in general or the Brinno specifically:

in case you start with a cam like this, you might want to:

use the best batteries. Not all are equal ;-). Based on this test we are using either Duracell Plus Power or the Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries

think about where and how you are going to place and secure the camera. Are you going to use a tripod? Is there a light pole nearby? A higher building? Do you want/need to build something yourself? Can you use a Cherry picker crane lift to place the camera?

try out both the camera (shoot a time lapse) and the stuff you want to secure the camera with in advance!

think about privacy. If you're working with a construction company and their personnel might be in the resulting clip: are they o.k.? Offer them to check out the clip before you publish it

if possible, place and secure the camera in a way that is hard for bad actors, so they can't easily steal or wreck your cam

check all the settings! Is the interval o.k.? Date and time set correct (what if you want to shoot only on Mondays - Fridays and only from 06:00-18:00, it's Sunday 19:00, but your cam thinks it is Wednesday 07:00?)

check your storage: did you get a quality card (check for instance this SD card test, we use this Samsung Evo Plus or this SanDisk Extreme Plus)? Did you empty the deleted files bin? Formatted the card correctly? Calculated you should have enough in light of your settings like interval?

wipe the lenses (also of the outdoor housing) with a anti-fog cloth

specific for the Brinno

unpacking a Brinno? Check the bag with silica bags/desiccants in it: it also contains a screwdriver ;-)

it comes with straps, and i wondered how to best use them so i asked the Brinno support people, and they send me this example:

they have a nice FAQ page: check it out (for instance about external power supply)!

the Brinno manuals mention an extension pole for the clamp. I inquired and that can be bought separately for 30 euro (ex VAT). It is also included in the ACC1000P 'clamp' package.

English
For the 1st project of our local solar cooperation, where we are going to put 3.000 solar panels on a roof of a company (which rents its roof to our cooperation), we wanted a time lapse video as a memory and communication item. We had some specific demands: we needed a camera that would last for more than 20 days, had to withstand rain/wind as it is placed outside, we needed some way of mounting it in a secure place with overview of the project (we had basically nothing higher that the roof we had to work on), the camera would need power and we didn't like running a cable to the roof etc ... So after considering the options:

a wild life camera

an action camera like a GoPro

building our own with a Raspberry Pi and Motion for example

hiring a professional photographer (would cost more than we wanted to spend)

...

we read about Brinno, a company dedicated to time lapse camera's. So after looking at their models, we opted for the BCC2000, a kit including the TLC2000 camera as well as a housing to withstand weather, a clamp to secure it to 'something' and a battery extension compartiment.

Above you'll find some video's, both as example time lapses as well as an introduction to the BCC2000 kit.

But once you try to buy a strip, you'll find there are so many types, so many decisions, it's easy to give up, since the chances of buying the wrong combination of stuff and thereby wasting money and resources is quite high.

But first, for some inspiration, see what you can do with LED strips:

a coole lamp

or maybe you want to have the LEDstrip respond to music and maybe create some cool disco lights. Have a look at this video for your options:

If you like handy work you could create this cool lamps

combine some strips in parallel to make a scroll effect:

make a Chameleon LEDstrip:

make your own clouds (description of how to to be found here):

while i was looking for Christmas effects, i ended up with shows like these, which show you, you can go crazy ;-)

cool sunglasse

and the great thing is: you can combine them with all kinds of sensors, or tie them into you home automation platform (like with Home Assistant and OpenHab) and much more...

O.k. So even to start with one strip, you need to have a little background. When i would have to learn everything from scratch, i think i would have started with the following guides and videos (some of these are comparatively old, but you'll still learn a lot from it):

(also check out the comments under the video)

I only found the below video after buying my 1st strips (i went for the WS2815, 3 strips of 1 meter 'plain' and 1 strip of 5 meter with IP65 so i should be able to use it outside), but i want to be able to find the video back.

Apart from the video, the presenter also shares a comparison chart:
O, and you want to read about LEDs, warmth and cooling through aluminium strips. And you really also want to read this short article about different shades of white light. And when you want advise on what strips to buy, please check this short article.

You still need to power the strips, decide what controller you're going to use to produce the right color effects etc. Check out the above mentioned video channel for more great video's!

I myself, before seeing the above ;-), bought

download the Arduino IDE software

find a library for my LED strip (i used the FastLED library) ... after installing it and restarting Arduino, i had to go to Arduino menu / Examples / FastLED to see some code (sketch books)

wired up all stuff':

i hooked up the power supply to a power outlet in my home (bought a rewireable EU power plug, took 3 wires, connected the wires to the plug, screwed the plug shut, and connected the other side of the wires to the MoRaVa power supply)

took a LED-strip: mine came with wires on both ends, 6 wires, 4 connected to the 4 connectors on the WS2815, 2 separate ones only connected to power. I took the 2 power wires and connected them to the MoRaVa

i connected the data-wire (which was green) of the 4-wire-block to the Arduino Mega (pin 6) and connected the ground wire of the 4-wire-block to a ground pin on the Mega

i found this handy diagram here (if you have a strip end without any wires, and need to solder, check this - or you can buy clips for solderless connection, just watch the nr of pins you need):

since i bought only one (but rather beefy) power supply, which only had outlets for 3 wire pairs, i wondered if and how i could power more LED strips while only having 3 outlets. Found the answer here: "Yes, a single LED power supply can be connected to more than one length of LED tape. As long as the total wattage of your LED strip lights doesn’t exceed that of the LED transformer, you can wire as many separate strips as you wish", see below. Or use a strip splitter as seen here.

So i started basically what is described in this video (and after showing how to connect the parts, this video also introduces you to how to simply program effects on your LED strip):

Handy stuff:

easy to forget as a n00b: when you load a demo sketch in Arduino: don't forget to change to what (data) pin you have connected your LED-strip to the Arduino, and the nr of LEDs on your strip

I soon learned the Arduino Mega 2560 doesn't have wifi, which isn't very handy when you want to control your strips over Wifi, so

i ordered a NodeMCU:

to get an idea how you can use it, see these short video's.

i tried WLED on the NodeMCU, which has awesome features like offering a Wifi AP, OTA, Philips Hue sync, webserver to control stiff, https://drive.google.com/open?id=1REqX9Dlu5XHfFBwAEcN0qa65FAwk-patnice set of effects, home automation integration etc.

WLED seems to use pin D4 as datapin (so use that to connect to your strip)

btw: i needed the config shown on this website to be able to upload my sketch. With the default config i got thrown an error with "termios.error: (22, Invalid argument)" , "esptool.main(fakeargs)" etc

i ordered some Wemos D1 mini's so i can do over-the-air updates and not having to hookup the Arduino Mega to my computer every time):

after arrival, i soldered the header pins (it came unsoldered)

flashed Aircoookie ESP8266 Minimal HTTP OTA Updater booter using Arduino IDE (you can also use ESPhomeFlasher for flashing)

downloaded and flashed the latest version of WLED. <port>Many people report good results using </port>ESPhomeFlasher to flash

if you're not using ESPhomeFlasher, but esptool, you want to make sure your controller is wiped nice and clean so any left behind bits won't interfere with the new code. A way to do so is by using "sudo esptool.py --port <port>erase_flash" (a WLED bin can than be written with:
sudo esptool.py --port write_flash WLED_0.8.6_ESP8266.bin
)</port>

to control the LED strip from my Home Assistant, i need to check out this thread or this one

i might try to use ESPhome on both the NodeMCU as well as Wemos D1 mini's, like so, so or so

if i can't get ESPhome running nor like WLED, i'll try ESPixelStick, toblum McLighting, or this (based on this solution)

WLED can also control a relay (on pin D6). As LED strips still consume some power even when no color is shown (the LED strip appears off), a relay can make sure the LED strip really doesn't use any power when you're not using your LED strip. I bought me some relays, but learned you have many different relays, and standard WLED code happened to control the relay in a way that forced me to use the NC port of the relay to make it work. But by changing a setting in the code, you can 'flip' how WLED controls the relay, which enabled me to use the NO port. You can change RLYMDE to 0 in NbpWrapper.h .

more stuff i learned while working with LED strips

i bought LED-strips requiring 12V. But i'm using NodeMCU's en Wemos D1 mini's to control the strips, and those run on 3 and 5 Volt. So i have a power supply supplying 12V, and i'd rather not have to use two power supplies. How can i both power the LEDs as well as the controller?

You can use both voltages to power both boards, just use the 5V pin to input 5V, the 5V pin can both be used as output as well as input, just not at the same time).

There are many components that can transform 12V to 5 or 3.3 V. A nice video explaining options can be found here:

I used buck convertors to convert the 12V to 5V for the NodeMCU and Wemos.

when you want to show video etc, check out OctoWS2811 with which you can for instance connect 32 strips of 60 leds and a small controller board to wow your friends with video...

when you want to power 12V LED strips as well as a 5V controller board, there are many options, including using a 12v-5v buck converter like this one, but you can also have a look at a 'Rechargeable DC12V and 5V USB Double Output Lithium ion battery pack' like this one

when you start playing with colours, you'll probably have use for a color picker to get the RGB values of a color: https://www.w3schools.com/colors/colors_picker.asp

you might want to check out and experiment with different enclosings etc to diffuse the light. Like this one, where for instance cheap Ikea Rabalder is used: .
Or you can create a lantern (see here for some inpiration and how a lantern with LEDs might look like) with cheap materials in any shape you like using techniques in this clip, and attach a LED-strip on the inside of it

2de pinksterdag.

English: so on Whit Monday i got a message in our local beekeeper app group ... someone had reported a swarm, about 16 miles from where i live, in a tree, about 15 feet from the ground. I never had captured a swarm. And you never know how long that swarm will stay in that place.

But i decided to give it a try. One time is going to be your first time right?

So i got to the tree. Friendly neighbours welcomed me and showed me the tree with the swarm. I set up my gear. It took me about 6 times or so climbing up the ladder to get more and more bees out of the tree. Because you have to get the queen, and it's hard to tell whether you finally got her in your temporary hive. I got stung at least 4 times. At some point, i noticed bees on my hive with their rear end in the air towards the tree, flapping their wings. This is to spread a scent, so the bees in the tree know the should come into the hive.

At dusk, i closed all openings, as about 99% of the bees where in the hive, and drove back home. Now i have to see whether they stay in my place and are able to make a new strong colony.

So we have this Harman Kardon Invoke, a smart speaker with Microsoft Cortana. For me as a non-US-user, it's a rather limited device. So trying to find the best use, i wondered if i could pair the Invoke with a Google Home via Bluetooth (BT), as to use the Invoke as BT-speaker.

I did find instructions of how to pair the Google Home mini to a BT-speaker, but the Google Home app seems to have evolved since that documentation was, so here i document how to pair a BT speaker:

open your Google Home app

go to Account, the icon of a little person in the lower left of the home screen

click the GH device you want to pair (i only had one at this moment, so i clicked '1 local device'

in the next screen, click the device itself (again)

in the next screen, click the gears icon in the upper right

you should be in 'Device Settings', a long list of settings. Look for 'Paired Bluetooth devices'. You should see a sub option ''.

If you've never paired the Invoke: press the BT pair icon on the Invoke. Your Invoke should show up in the GH app. Click it

If you've paired the Invoke before: click your Invoke

Currently, i have not found a way yet to keep the BT-connection survive the GH turning off (for the night) and on again. So i need to press the BT pair button on the Invoke every time i want GH sound to go over the Invoke.

Invoke review:

we find this Invoke activates Cortana with 'false-positives' (activating it while nobody says Hi Cortana) than the Google Home and Amazon Alexa ... especially when the TV is on ...rather annoying, especially when Cortana starts responding to what it thinks it heard ...

it has no open API whatsoever, so no way of having it play nice with other smart devices via Home Assistant or something

there hardly seems any development going on ... another Microsoft graveyard product? And Harman Kardon not feeling responsible for that partnershop and customers? But reading this, let's hope at some point, something new will arrive and they won't forget the current customers

very limited set of services

So we had this Agapornis. We like to give our birds the possibility to fly around our living room. We thought it would be nice to buy the bird a pal, a friend. This turned out to make it a couple (with these birds it is hard to tell whether they are male or female).

Before we knew it, one started typical behaviour of trying to collect nesting material. Which means they'll try to find stems from plants and flowers to rip them apart into fibers. So after some plants were demolished before we knew what was going on, we basically stopped buying new plants. After that, the female turned to ripping paper. It's funny to see they put the material between their feathers to transport it to their nest, often loosing most of what they collected.

So i found this blog with lots of info about Agapornis nesting and young. If you ever wonder at what age you could sell/buy a baby Agapornis, how to handle a nest etc: read it! Interesting is that in that article, they say you can take the young babies in your hands for a short while every some days; i emailed them, as our Agapornis attacks us when we get close: we need protective gear :-). Turns out their parent Agapornis flies away when they approach it. Their explanation: if your Agapornis has learned not to fear hands before it started nesting, it probably also feels o.k. attacking hands while having eggs and raising young.

Other observations:

our agapornis love our salt lamp and seem to bite stuff off it

our agapornis seem to eat soil (from a pot from a plant they ripped apart)

our agapornis love biting of parts of an ornament i think is made of gypsum (although we offer them grit)

Lees dan zeker dit blog .Raoul Teeuwenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08147564137868005615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6278802.post-7205015300543403282018-12-29T11:14:00.000+01:002018-12-29T11:14:24.830+01:00Data Science at the Command Line

At SURF i had the chance to attend a course 'data science at the command line'. Jeroen Janssens from Data Science Workshops B.V. showed the attendees in a hands on workshop what you can do from the command line. The great thing: he recorded all commands, so you can play them back if you want to :-). The file with the commands can be found here.

The accompanying sheets, which also includes the Docker container you can download to execute the commands in, can be found here, but for your convenience, from the command line:

docker pull datascienceworkshops/data-science-at-the-command-line

docker run -it --rm -v "${PWD}":/data datascienceworkshops/data-science-at-the-command-line

You get introduced to the strength of (combining) commands like awk, aws, body, cat, cowsay, csv2vw, csvgrep, csvjoin, csvlook, csvsql, curl, cut, drake, dseq, dumbplot, find, git, head, header, join, jq, less, nl, node, parallel, paste, pup, python, R, Rio, scrape, seq, shuf, sort, sql2csv, tapkee, tr, tree, uniq, wc, which, xmlstarlet, zcat .

Try it for yourself! It's really easy > open a command line, install docker, install the container and play out the commands in the file and see what happens!

Thanks to Jeroen he lets me share this. And check out his company if you or your colleagues could benefit from the power of the command line!
Next to the GDPR, there is also the ePrivacyRegulation. I found this analysis, with these summarized findings of how GDPR and ePR relate and compare:

“Our findings can be summarised as follows:

the ePR intends to particularise the rules of the GDPR insofar as it relates to processing of data that qualify as personal data;

however, it does not always succeed in this aim, because it does not actually complement, add to, or deviate from the GDPR in any meaningful way;

where the ePR does add to or deviate from the GDPR, it is unclear what the added value is, either in terms of enhancing data protection rights, or supporting the free movement of data and services;

in particular, there is an overreliance on ‘consent’ as a legal basis for data processing, which would exclude alternative legal bases permitted under the GDPR, like the need to process data for the purposes of a ‘legitimate interest’;

the ePR also intends to complement the rules of the GDPR, where the latter clearly does not apply, for example when it comes to data concerning legal persons;

however, the ePR’s added value here may also be marginal, as these data will in most cases also relate to natural persons;

moreover, the usefulness of covering legal persons by ePR-rules is limited as it will be problematic in practice to apply concepts like consent to legal persons; and

more fundamentally, one can question the suitability of applying the concept of privacy to corporate communications data (which is not personal data), especially in light of the fact that such corporate data will also enjoy protection under rules such”
