Manipuleren met statistieken

Onderzoek wordt vaak gebruikt om een boodschap kracht bij te zetten, om iemand te overtuigen, om aandeelhouders gunstig te stemmen etc.

Het is goed te beseffen dat cijfers en grafieken te manipuleren zijn. Zonder te jokken. Toen ik het artikel "Manipuleren met statistieken" op Scientas las, waar simpel een aantal manipulaties op een rij wordt gezet, moest ik ook denken aan de uitspraak: "Er zijn drie soorten leugens: leugens, grove leugens, en statistieken", zou Benjamin Disraeli ooit gezegd hebben.

You & me in a petri dish

(Dutch below)I find the idea of being able to copy our mind, our personality, interesting. Things like ideas of The Matrix, or teleportation ... it sounds fascinating, and i don't assume it will never be possible. Never and always are words you have to be careful with :-).

But the article "Ghost in the Shell: Why Our Brains Will Never Live in the Matrix" does make me doubt. Nice reasoning of why it might be unlikely you can copy someone's being.

(Dutch)De gedachte dat we ooit in staat zijn om iemands persoonlijkheid te kopieeren, boeit me. Ideeen zoals je ze ziet in de Matrix of StarTrek ("beam me up") zijn fascineren. Ik sluit niet uit dat dat ooit mogelijk wordt. Zeg nooit nooit.

Maar het artikel "Ghost in the Shell: Why Our Brains Will Never Live in the Matrix" maakt me wel aan het twijfelen. Interessante redenatie waarom het onwaarschijnlijk is dat we ooit een persoonlijkheid kunnen klonen.

Opgelicht: bankpas ontfutseld via winkelwagentruc

(Dutch) Een kennis van meldde het volgende:

"Mijn ouders hadden samen boodschappen gedaan bij een supermarkt in Veghel. Mijn vader ging het winkelwagentje terugbrengen terwijl mijn moeder (heeft wat moeite met lopen vanwege pijnlijke heup) alvast in de auto ging zitten.

Mijn vader werd aan de praat gehouden door een keurig geklede man met een oude wegenkaart die de weg naar Eindhoven vroeg.

Mijn moeder werd intussen door een keurig uitziende meneer gevraagd of ze geld kon wisselen voor een winkelwagentje. Hij had alleen een munt van 2 euro. Mijn moeder keek in haar portemonnee en vond 50 eurocent. De man zei dat dat al prima was maar mijn moeder wilde hem gewoon zijn twee euro teruggeven. Daarna keek ze hem na in de achteruitkijkspiegel omdat ze het niet helemaal vertrouwde.

De man liep naar de karretjes deed een muntje in het karretje maar haalde het er meteen weer uit en liep weg. Dat vond mijn moeder verdacht dus keek ze of haar bankpas er nog was. Weg! Geen moment meer nagedacht maar achter de man aangerend (heel hard voor haar doen).

De man werd verrast door mijn moeder die hem in de kraag van zijn pak greep en riep dat ze haar bankpas terugwilde. Hij ontkende maar mijn moeder bleef schreeuwen dat ze haar pas terugwilde. Intussen kwam mijn vader erbij die de man tegen de muur duwde. Mijn moeder keek zijn zakken na en hoorde toen iets op de grond vallen. Het was haar bankpas die de man tussen de winkelwagentjes gooide. De man rukte zich los en riep dat mijn moeder hartstikke gek was en ging er snel vandoor. De man met de vage wegenkaart was ook ineens verdwenen.

Op zich wel een leerzaam verhaal dus. Mijn moeder heeft niet gemerkt dat hij het pasje uit haar portemonnee nam maar kreeg argwaan toen hij genoegen wilde nemen met 50 eurocent gewisseld tegen 2 euro".

Dat het delen van dit verhaal maar enkele mensen mag behoeden van deze truc...

Nice documentary about colors

Just saw this nice documentary (Dutch voice over, originally 'The World of Colors' by Gedeon Programmes is English) about colors, their origins, use, influence etc. And while trying to get more info online, found Dutch website TV-Blik, that seems to do something with online TV, enabling you to define your favorites, offering you more of your taste and enabling to embed episodes in your own website, get an email when another episode is due etc.

(don't mind the dull picture below, just watch (part of) the documentary ;-))

TV-Blik geeft je de mogelijkheid TV-uitzendingen op je eigen website op te nemen, aan te geven of je meer van sport, films, actualiteiten, documentaires etc houdt, een seintje te krijgen zodra er een uitzending van je favoriete programma aan komt etc. Deze documentaire over kleuren vond ik erg fraai, informatief etc.

How reliable are human observations: test yours!

This is a neat mind trick. There is this clip where you see a couple of people throwing 2 balls. There is a group with black shirts, and a group with white shirts. Your goal: count how many times the balls are thrown by the people with white shirts. You can find the video at Viscog.

Don't read this message any further before having watched the video. No, really, stop reading, you'll spoil the trick!

Now: watch the same movie again, but DON'T watch the ball. Watch the monkey / gorilla that walks into the video from the right a few seconds after the video starts. Can you believe you actually missed this the first time? Amazing how your mind can filter information! Now, what could you be missing on other moments in your live? How trustworthy are your, or anybody's, observations?

You DID see the monkey the first time? Good for you! Most people don't see it!

Ik ga nu vertellen wat de clou is, en als je dat leest voordat je de video bekijkt, werkt het natuurlijk niet. Goed. Bekijk dan de video voor de 2de keer. Zie je de aap/gorilla in beeld? Had je die de 1ste keer ook gezien, zonder dat je wist dat hij in beeld zou komen? De meeste mensen zien hem niet. Je bent zo gefocused op de bal, dat je hem niet bewust ziet. Dus wat zegt dat over het waarnemingsvermogen van mensen? Hoe betrouwbaar zijn getuigenverklaringen etc? En zie je dus ook in het dagelijks leven veel dingen niet?

A friend brought this video to my attention. It's a professor explaining why a very modest growth has huge consequences. And why understanding this, might help us save the world! Really. Don't believe me? Please watch this video! (even if it is only one of the 8 parts per day)

Examples from the video: a growth of the population of only 1% per year means you have twice as many people in only one lifetime. And an inflation of 7% per year means you pay 960 euro in 70 years for what now costs 15 euro. Understanding this, also helps understanding stories in newspapers saying crime has doubled in 10 years (which means 7% growth a year).

This friend also pointed me to this Crash Course ('everything you need to know about the economy in the shortest amount of time'): it shows how our current monetary systems works, and what might happen in the next couple of years as a result. This really is another video you want to check out! This is material you normally pay lots of money for in a seminar, or need to read books for taking hours of your time.

Augmented Reality coming to the normal world?

I've read about augmented reality for some time. It's probably going to follow the Gartner hype cycle, and still is climbing the peak :-). But real world applications seem to be appearing! For example:

- this iPhone application
- magazine applications here (check out the links in that item, like the top 10!) and below

- Lego using it to show from a box how the completed model will look like (and move!)


These applications sure look promising! (Dutch) Publishers wanting to know more: check out BeyondReality.nl (probably more companies are going to do this in the future)

Virtual Walt Disney World Added To Google Earth

A virtual tour of Walt Disney World on Google Earth may help plan a vacation, or it might substitute for the real thing. All the theme parks and 20 Disney Resort hotels have been placed in Google Earth. Even small details of Mickey Mouse's amusement park have been included in the online Google Earth tour. Users can zoom down Main Street, USA, fly around Cinderella Castle, explore Spaceship Earth and climb the Tree of Life.

Aside from the joy of visiting Disney World without waiting in line, the online tour is designed to help users plan a vacation. The virtual Disney World also contains small details that heighten the sense of being there, including park benches, merry-go-round horses, minimum rider height for certain rides, and souvenir shops. To virtually go to Disney, a user downloads Google Earth and selects the Gold Mickey Ears icon.

About 100,000 photos by eight photographers were used to create 1,500 3-D models of buildings, and there are also links to blogs and YouTube videos.

Some observers are suggesting that, in creating such a detailed online planning tool, Disney may be opening the door to virtual trips that take the place of the real thing. For instance, Andrew Smith of the Dallas Morning News wrote semi-seriously that, with the price of both air fare and gas rising so fast, "I think parents with gullible children should consider 'taking their kids to Disney World' by sitting them down in front of a monitor."

Andrew Frank, a research director with Gartner, noted, even with advances made in gaming, we're still "quite a ways from substituting a virtual vacation for a physical one."

Arctic melting ... antartic freezing?

I'm intrigued by the global warming discussion, and it in fact is the reason my family is moving from a part of The Netherlands that is below sea-level. We've recently seen ice breaking off. But what to do with this research (Dutch & German): German scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polair and Marine research (AWI) conducted research from February till April (that's the summer in that part of the world), and they measured the temperature of the deepsea in the antarctic is actually dropping and satellites show the icemass is growing ("the biggest icemass ever recorded in antarctic summer"). This while the past summer on the Arctic was the hottest ever recorded. The team wil continue their research before jumping to conclusions and see whether this drop in temperature is temporary or a trend. (by the way: Der Spiegel, the German publication running the story, publishes pictures of 'melting antarctic beauty' ... confusing guys! Is the ice melting or growing :-)?). Anyway: i know this guy (Richard de Jong) who has a friend that has worked and researched several years in the antarctic, and he's not convinced we can stop worrying about global warming.

I just read about the following: the OpenPandora DS-sized Linux-based gaming-PC/UMPC etc (estimated price 210 euro) (openpandora site), the 3rd version of the cute Cube MP3 which now is able to play video (but who wants to on that tiny oled screen :-)?) costing 99 dollar, the second version of the OLPC / XO (the XO-2), another Asus eeePC-clone (cheap, but double-check the specs before buying ;-)), this car sun visor with DVD-player and touchscreen for sale for 130 euro and an online photo scrapblog (nice, but just as with the paper-based ones probably takes considerable time and i think you're better off with a printed version (scrapbook might want to implement a print-on-demand feature ;-)).
