Network management - the smart way

I was cleaning up files (one great thing to do during these Christmas days) and found an article on my harddrive about Syracuse University (The Shrines of our Lives). Basically it says they tried some of those expensive network management systems (NMS, like HP Openview, Tivoli, CA Unicenter: the article doesn't mention the ones they gave a go), but eventually gave up on the promises and started using WhatsUp (Gold). For them, that relatively inexpensive tool does the trick. As the article was from 2000, i checked the info, and found Syracuse still mentions using WhatsUp. Don't know WhatsUp? You might want to give it a go...
